Biography

Formed by songwriter Kyle David Burkett and drummer Zack DePew in the winter of 2005, Secrets Between Sailors began playing shows in basements and at house parties under several monikers-- including Bourbon & St. Peter and The Dawn Raid. Andrew Maxson, a screen-printer and bass guitarist attending art school at Indiana University, joined the band permanently on New Year's Eve. Pete Voakes, of NYC's Magic Tricks, and Ryan Helling, of Indiana’s The Country Death, also spent time playing with the Sailors before moving on to different musical and geographical landscapes.
SBS soon established themselves in the Midwestern bar/club scene and added guitarist Andreas Butler to the line-up.  They earned some cash, regional attention, and recording time, and self-produced their debut record.  The album was recorded at Russian Recording with Mike Bridavsky and mastered by Bob Weston (of Shellac) at Chicago Mastering.  Zack DePew left the group in September, 2008, and was replaced by Kyle "K-Rock" Collins of the hip-hop trio 2 Mics And A Kit.
Secrets Between Sailors draw influence equally from hall of famers like Neil Young and garage punks such as the Replacements, Guided By Voices and Husker Du;  They’re fighting to keep rock’n’roll honest in the age of Creed and Clear Channel.
